Revisiting irrigation efficiency before restoring ancient irrigation canals in multi-functional, nature-based water systems

چکیده
In the Middle Ages, Muslims introduced communal water management in Iberian Peninsula. Some irrigation systems of medieval origin are still operation mountainous areas Southern Spain. Snowmelt runoff is diverted during spring from high-altitude streams into contoured recharge ditches that convey to high infiltration (shallow aquifers). This regulates and delays discharge main river, which downstream flow diverted, late summer, supply terraces fields on river plains. The Busquístar ditch its scheme comprise one these ancient systems. 1) To characterize system, source regulation, users' association, multi-functionality, quality as a nature-based solution for security. 2) review efficiency concept applied restoration systems, taking account their ecosystem services. i) Semi-structured interviews with stakeholders evaluate system perceptions multi-functionality; ii) field surveys description riparian flora; iii) satellite imagery quantifying vegetation; iv) balance computation. Crop production function but additional services creation landscape biodiversity. Eight plant communities were distinguished along ditch. measured at head 23 July 3 September 2017 represented 14 50% mean September, respectively. first bifurcation was about half head, revealing proportion filtered 6470-m long conveyance reach. remaining then 4 branches 3140-m distribution reach proportionally irrigable area each branch. Automated Archeological Survey of Ancient Irrigation Canals Abstract of the Thesis Automated Archaeological Survey of Ancient Irrigation Canals
In Ancient Southern Mesopotamia (now Iraq), rainfall was never high enough to sustain agriculture, so for thousands of years people used a system of canals to irrigate their fields. These canals, built up over generations, have long formed the basis of settlement patterns and state relations in the region, making their location and mapping of key interest to archaeologists. However, since 1991,...
متن کاملRobust Adaptive Predictive Control of Water Distribution in Irrigation Canals
Applying automatic control methods to irrigation canals is a way to improve the management of irrigation systems. The dynamic difficulties that involved this hydraulic systems such as non-linearity, varying time delay, and uncontrolled perturbations make the choice of a suitable automatic control method a challenge. To this purpose, this paper presents a methodology for design of decentralized ...
متن کاملDistributed model predictive control for irrigation canals DISTRIBUTED MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL OF IRRIGATION CANALS
Irrigation canals are large-scale systems, consisting of many interacting components, and spanning vast geographical areas. For safe and efficient operation of these canals, maintaining the levels of the water flows close to prespecified reference values is crucial, both under normal operating conditions as well as in extreme situations. Irrigation canals are equipped with local controllers, to...
متن کاملPreceramic irrigation canals in the Peruvian Andes.
One of the most important developments in the existence of human society was the successful shift from a subsistence economy based on foraging to one primarily based on food production derived from cultivated plants and domesticated animals. The shift to plant food production occurred in only a few independent centers around the world and involved a commitment to increased sedentism and social ...
